Flagship during The Cold War

In case of war HDMS Peder Skram would be the flagship controlling the Danish and West-German naval forces in their defense against an invasion. It was from HDMS Peder Skram the large-scale, coordinated missile attack, against a hostile landing forces,  called "Operation Hurricane", was to be launched and directed. In 1966, when Peder Skram was launched, she caused international attention by being the first major warship propelled by a combination of gas turbines and diesel engines and fitted with variable pitch propellers for adjusting the speed.

In 1982 a HARPOON missile by accident was launched from Peder Skram. The missile flew 34 km before detonating in a weekend cottage area at Lumsås near Sjællands Odde. The explosion caused the destruction of 4 cottages, and damage to another 130. No persons were injured.
