The Museum Frigate

The restoring of the Frigate

In 1988 the Frigate was de-commissioned and laid-up in order to be sold for scrap. That meant that all equipment of any use from bunk lamps to weapons systems was dismounted. At an auction at Holmen on April 7th 1992 the Frigate was bought by a consortium in 1995 awarding the frigate to the Foundation Peder Skram. The purpose of buying and handing over the Frigate was based on a wish to resurrect the Frigate as a living museum. After the sale the Defense Command has approved that the Frigate can remain as a museum and use the name and crest of the original Frigate.

Since 1992 a lot of items have been recovered after having disappeared during the lay-up period. The storage rooms of the Navy, phased-out ships and numerous other sources have contributed with many hundred original or similar items, which have then been installed onboard. Furthermore, the Frigate has been restored and maintained by the voluntary technical division supported by companies when strictly necessary - in May 2001 for a bottom treatment and in 2007 when the hull and superstructure was sandblasted and painted. Again in 2018 the frigate was at the shipyard for bottem treatment and painting.

In May 2018 one of the frigates two gasturbines was returned from US Coastguard and reinstalled onboard.

The Frigate now appears newly painted and restored from the top of the mast to the bottom of the keel. Inside, all relevant rooms have been renovated and brought back to former standard, and 3 theme-rooms have been designed. The first one tells about Peder Skram - the old Admiral as well as the two former naval ships of that name and about the present Frigate and its equipment. Furthermore, significant events during the service of the Frigate are described like - naturally - the story of the Oops-missile.

Another of them tells about the Cold War and the role of the Frigate as a flagship, while the third room tells about life onboard. In addition to all this a collection of models of Danish naval vessels from the same period of the Cold War will be on display. The entire story will be told to the visitors via small, portable audio-guides (in Danish and English) handed out when buying a ticket.

Official inauguration of HDMS Peder Skram as a museum

Even if the renovation is a never-ending affair, Peder Skram on September 23rd 2008 could be inaugurated as a museum ship. Her Majesty the Queen and the Prince Consort arrived by Barge Number 1 to the Frigate lying at Elefanten to officially inaugurate the Frigate as a museum.

The ceremony took place in the presence of the many sponsors who through the years have supported the restoring and the many volunteers who have taken part in the resurrection of the Frigate. Furthermore, the Chief of Defense staff and a number of former commanding officers of HDMS Peder Skram and persons attached to the museum world took part. Naval cadets hoisted The Naval Ensign and the Jack, while the band of The Royal Danish Navy played homage march number 1 whereupon the Her Majesty the Queen performed the official inauguration.
