The pier "Elefanten" (The Elephant)

The pier, Elefanten (the Elephant), is named after a ship of the line. This three-decker for many years was considered the finest ship of the Navy, and during the first years of the war it was used as the flagship. HDMS Elefanten was Admiral Gyldenløve's flagship in 1710 and took part in the Battle of Køge Bay on October 4th where the ship of the line, HDMS Dannebrog, under command of captain Ivar Huitfeldt blew up, and under the fighting at Pommern, September 28-30 1712, when a Swedish transport squadron was partly annihilated.

In 1715 it was the flagship of Admiral Raben during the Battle at Rügen on August 8th. In 1728 the ship was grounded at Nyholm to protect the laid-up ships against the ice and to form the foundation of a small island, which has now merged with Nyholm under the name of Elefanten. Soon the small island was converted to a windlass ground (a place where the ships were keelhauled, i.a. cleaned under the water line and coated in tar) and next to it a crane was built almost the size of The Round Tower of Copenhagen.

The building next to HDMS Peder Skram originally was built as a bath and toilet building for the depot vessel Fyen, which was lying here till 1962, whereupon it was phased out and scrapped. The building stayed, and the Foundation now has been given part of it to use for a ticket office, workshop, changing room, offices and meeting rooms.
