HDMS Peder Skram under fire

In 1977 the frigate once more joined NATO's Standing Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) consisting of 6-7 other frigates and destroyers. During an exercise on January 28th the force was to train gunnery at night. The ships participating sailed in two columns with some 5 miles distance between the columns. By firing star shells they were to illuminate each other's ships. The shells were fired by the main guns of the ships and they were to explode in the air behind the opposite line of ships to silhouette them.

The British destroyer, HMS London, started shooting directly at HDMS Peder Skram.

By mistake the British destroyer, HMS London, started shooting directly at Peder Skram instead of over the frigate. The first salvo hit the water very close to Peder Skram, but before the next salvo was fired HDMS Peder Skram managed to call the British destroyer and tell it about the grave error. If they had aimed just a fraction of a degree higher the frigate would have been hit and fire would have broken out onboard.
